Webinar: Advancing Ontario Aquaculture through Research and Indigenous Collaboration

https://aquaculture.ca/aquacultureisagriculture

Ontario fish farmers are invited to a webinar focused on two areas with real potential for our sector: expanding lake whitefish culture and strengthening the future of freshwater aquaculture in Ontario.

On September 29 at 10:00am, hear from research leaders about new practical resources for raising lake whitefish, as well as research bringing industry, First Nations, government and academia together to tackle environmental challenges and identify priorities for sustainable aquaculture growth.

It’s all part of the 33rd OMAFA Research in Action Webinar, with this session dedicated entirely to Ontario aquaculture:

  • Tuesday, September 29, 2026
  • 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.
  • Virtual via Zoom

Click here Tuesday, Sept 29 at 10 am to tune in

  • No registration is required.  Simply use the Zoom link to join on September 29. The passcode is: research.

We hope to see lots of OAA members online for this important conversation about the research, partnerships and opportunities shaping the future of Ontario aquaculture.

Here's what you will hear about from two Ontario aquaculture leaders:

Lake Whitefish: Turning research into practical tools

Dr. Marcia Chiasson
Manager, Ontario Aquaculture Research Centre

Dr. Chiasson will highlight work to support the culture of lake whitefish, including new practical training resources developed for fish farmers and Indigenous communities.

The project has produced a lake whitefish culture manual, online course and instructional videos, along with workshops and industry partnerships designed to build the knowledge and skills needed to grow this emerging aquaculture opportunity.

Freshwater Aquaculture: Building the research agenda together

Dr. Neil Rooney
Associate Professor, University of Guelph

Dr. Rooney will discuss work bringing together First Nations, industry, government, academia and other stakeholders to help guide the future of freshwater aquaculture research in Ontario.

The project explored sustainable aquaculture practices, environmental challenges, opportunities to reduce the ecological footprint of rainbow trout farming, and ways to strengthen collaboration across the sector.
