Antimicrobial resistance poses a serious threat to human health, and there is much public concern regarding antibiotic use in aquaculture as a possible contributing factor. Regardless of whether antibiotic use in aquaculture is functionally related to the development of resistance in
important human pathogens, antimicrobial resistance is relevant in that it may reduce the effectiveness of the limited treatment options available for fish health management.
In this webinar, Dr. Trushenski will cover the basics of antibiotic resistance and how it can develop, remind participants of the ‘dos and don’ts’ of legal and judicious use of antibiotics in U.S. aquaculture, and describe recent research aimed at separating assumptions from reality related to antibiotic resistance in aquaculture.
