Description

This Symposium for Extension was chaired by Ronald E. Kinnunen.

Objectives:

1. To provide a forum where industry, resource managers, and environmental/conservation organizations can discuss areas of concern and determine what scientific evidence is required to make reasoned decisions.
2. To provide environmental regulators and environmental interest groups with an opportunity to learn more about aquaculture, which includes both private and government run facilities, in the North Central Region.
3. To address four main areas of concern:
4.     the role of aquaculture in the spread of non-indigenous aquatic nuisance species,
5.     the movement of various fish diseases and parasites to new geographic locations through aquaculture practices,
6.     the escapement of cultured fish into the environment which could affect the genetic makeup of native stocks, and
7.     the discharge of aquaculture effluents into the environment.
8. To provide a forum where aquaculture industry, resource managers, and environmental/conservation organizations can discuss the areas of concern and determine what scientific evidence is required to make reasoned decisions.  By identifying areas of mutual interest, particularly in research areas, many of the environmental concerns with aquaculture can be addressed in a scientific fashion.
9. To produce a proceedings of the Symposium that will include summaries of papers presented on the first day and an overview of the group process on the second day.
